Georgian Downs and Ontario iGaming Rules

Ontario runs a regulated online gambling market, with a public list of the sites allowed to operate in it. This page explains how it works for readers around Lake Simcoe, and how this guide's paid links work.

The regulated market

The province's regulated online gambling market began on April 4, 2022. For games run by private operators, iGaming Ontario handles conduct and management, and oversight as regulator falls to the AGCO. The rule for a private online casino is short. Ontario allows it on just two conditions: AGCO registration, plus an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

Not every online casino in the province is private. OLG.ca is Ontario's government-run online casino, separate from the private operators. Someone who knows the slot floor beside the Georgian Downs track will find online play runs under different rules. A site's legal status depends on registration, not on how familiar its games look.

Checking a site

Regulated online gambling sites appear on one official list: the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. Any site left off it is not regulated in Ontario. Playing online requires being 19+ and physically present in Ontario at the time.

Run by iGaming Ontario, BetGuard sits at betguard.ca. Through one request, someone aged 19 or above can be excluded from each online gambling site regulated in Ontario, OLG.ca included. Land-based casinos, the casino at Georgian Downs among them, remain outside it. Those are covered by OLG's self-exclusion program, My PlayBreak, whose casino break closes every Ontario casino to that person.

How this guide is paid

Every paid link in this guide carries the Ad label, and all of them sit on the home page alone. Three exist: a menu link, a link placed beneath the first screen and a link close to the bottom. Their destination is an online casino partner, privately run, which goes unnamed here and may change.

Those links pay this guide a commission, and the guide makes no promise about the partner. Readers should test any online casino against the official Ontario directory of regulated sites, described above, before using it. No connection exists between the partner and the venue at 7485 5th Side Road. The guide is never paid for links to the venue, the track, the province or help services.

Questions at the rail

Q1How does a player confirm that an online casino operates legally in Ontario?

Look the site up at igamingontario.ca, in the iGaming Ontario directory, which is the official roster of regulated online gambling sites.

Q2Can someone play on an Ontario site from outside the province?

Not under Ontario rules. Only people aged 19 or over may play online, and only from a spot physically within Ontario's borders.

Q3Does BetGuard cover the casino in Innisfil?

No, BetGuard does not cover the casino at 7485 5th Side Road. One sign-up there shuts a person out of Ontario's regulated online gambling sites together, though land-based casinos stay beyond its reach. Those come under OLG's own self-exclusion program, My PlayBreak. Once begun, a casino break runs its full term of 1 to 5 years, 6 months or 3 months, with no early end. Signing up means phoning the OLG Support Centre on 1-800-387-0098 or asking casino staff.
